This cake was made for a friend, who loves Japan and it's culture, I was told by his wife that he also loves torii gates. A Torii is a traditional Japanese gate commonly found at the entry to a Shinto shrine, although it can be found at Buddhist temples as well. Torii mark the transition from the sacred (the shrine) to the profane (the normal world). Torii's many times stand in the middle of water, so I decided to do just that. The torii is constructed of fondant and is standing in a small pool of blue jello to resemble water. The cake was chocolate chip with vanilla buttercream/chocolate chip filling. Happy birthday Jeremy!

Jeremy's cake was wonderful in all ways. Your attention to detail amazes in every cake and cupcake I've seen, Melissa. You are so clever. A chocolate chip cake is a lovely surprise on the inside, too, for an adult 'chocoholic'...(like me).
